Who are we?
AK-O-Mak, one of North America's finest sports camps, has given thousands of girls from all over the world a summer that they remember for the rest of their lives. Founded in 1928 as the world's first competitive swimming camp, Ak-O-Mak has remained steadfast in providing a perfect combination of both a traditional wilderness, sports and swim camp all in one. We offer personal development, improved athletic skills, improved social skills and a tremendous amount of fun in an exciting and safe environment. The experiences that you'll enjoy and the friendships that you'll make at Camp Ak-O-Mak will last a lifetime.
Location
Situated on beautiful, clear Ahmic Lake and surrounded by deep green forest, Ak-O-Mak, and its brother camp Chikopi, are located on two separate campuses (over 300 acres each) in the Almaguin Highlands of Ontario, about 185 miles north of Toronto. It is an ideal setting that offers the challenges of nature along with competitive swimming and numerous other sports.
Facilities
Ak-O-Mak has large grass playing fields, two clay tennis courts, a climbing wall, a low/high ropes course, a criss-crossing golf course and driving range, a softball diamond, two beach volleyball courts and bulkhead swimming pools. Campers have a huge collection of boats to choose from including a fleet of cedar-stripped canoes, sunfish and hobie cat sailboats, flat-water kayaks, and windsurfing equipment. A sauna, trampoline, diving tower, and archery range are other highlights of the camp.
The girls live in 13-person cabins with 2 or 3 counselors. Nutritious, home-cooked meals are prepared in the modern kitchen and enjoyed in the Mainhouse at family-style dining. Laundry is done on the premises.
Facilities and services are inspected by government health officials and meet all standards. The camp's facilities meet all additional requirements of the Ontario Camping Association and the Canadian Camping Association.
Enrollment
Each camp session is limited to 100 campers total. Campers come from all over the world with about 70% from the United States and Canada. Our size ensures a close-knit, happy family atmosphere where each and every camper is a valued member of our group and given constant individual attention.
A summer at Camp Ak-O-Mak is also about learning to live with other people, sharing ideas and working out differences. Camp values diversity and develops a community of individuals who learn acceptance and celebration of people from different cultures, race, religions, ages and socio-economic backgrounds. The commonality between everyone at camp is a set of strong values including respect for yourself, for others and helping those around you.
Medical
Inspection for the campers is an ongoing responsibility of the staff. A formal inspection takes place daily. Personal health and safety are carefully and continuously monitored. A camp nurse is always available in the infirmary and hospital facilities are a short drive from camp.
Religious life
Ak-O-Mak is nondenominational. Arrangements may be made for out-of-camp services. Each child may participate in the weekly vesper service which stresses the importance of good citizenship, friendship and character.
